ACS Pre-K - 5 Principal Chat

Welcome to our interactive blog.  It is a very difficult and uncertain time. At ACS we would like to stay connected with the community and address your specific concerns and ideas. Please post questions and/or ideas you may have for distance learning and the health of our learning community in this blog. I will post answers to questions in collaboration with ACS and Leonia School District faculty.

Thank You,

  1. Hello,

I hope everyone is staying healthy.

Now that the Governor announced NJ schools will not meet face to face for the remainder of the school year, are there any plans for a virtual kindergarten move-up ceremony? I hope so.

    Thank you,
    Jonida Dervishi
    Parent of a kindergartner

    1. Thank you for your question. We are in the process of discussing plans with teachers, parents, and administrators. Once plans are complete we will send out a message.

  2. Please consider having teachers post assignments the night before or by 7am the morning of. With multiple children in district, it can be difficult in the morning trying to print out and organize everyone's individual work.

    1. Thank you for your suggestion. Our teachers are working around the clock, planning, filming videos, creating materials, communicating with parents, and delivering instruction on zoom and Google Meets. They also have their own children and schedules to juggle at home.
Teachers, however, continue to be responsive to the varied needs of their students and their families. If you have an individual and specific request please contact your child's teacher and they will respond.

  3. I echo the parent comment above about teachers posting assignments the night before. We understand they are under a lot of of pressure, but so are we, the parents to continue to do our jobs, some from home, if we are lucky, not to mention some of us who are out of work. For those of us who are working from home, we need to be ready to arrange our kids schedule/presentations/get them up to speed on the spot at 8 a.m. while having to juggle our own work schedules, meetings, and multiple kids. At the very least, can the teachers post a (generalized summary the night before) of the schedule for the next day? They probably have a general idea of the schedule for the next day by let's say 9 or 10 p.m. the night before.

For example, at least post something like this: tomorrow, be ready to: present your project, work on multiplication..etc. Kids also thrive on routine so the more info they have on what to expect, the better the outcome will be.

Thanks for all your continued work and listening and being proactive when parents are providing suggestions for enhancing distance learning. No one loves the current situation but we are all doing the best we can under the circumstances.

  4. Is ACS providing laptops/mobile devices to teachers? One of the teachers told me that they only have one laptop at home and they had to share it with their spouse (also working from home, and a similar work day schedule) so that obviously makes the teacher's job and distance learning challenging. I hope all the teachers have the right resources (I know chrome books were loaned to to students, I hope devices were also issued to the teachers so that they can work effectively.)

    Thank you.

  5. Hello,

I am a parent of a 5th grader - to my knowledge the quality of work is no longer being graded, therefore standards do not apply. While I am very sympathetic to the challenges that everyone is facing, I am curious to know 1. How do we maintain ethics, moral, etc. in terms of keeping up with school work if they know that everyone is simply "getting an A" for turning work in? It is disheartening to those students that are remaining focused, working hard, putting in the effort, etc. each day. 2. How will the middle school's teachers/administrators address this issue in 6th grade? If children aren't being "graded" on their assignments, how will they determine if the lessons are being taught, if children are grasping the materials, etc.? Thanks
